Nigerian fashion has metamorphosed from being merely cultural to a way of life. A whole new generation of fashion designers, music artistes, fashion creatives and fashion’s taste makers have made it desirable to be seen wearing clothes made by Nigerian designers. This influence has gradually seeped out and is being represented on runways around the world.

The Guaranty Trust Bank Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2013 scheduled to take place on the 23rd of October to the 26th October 2013 at Eko Hotel’s Ocean View in Lagos, Nigeria is a multi day premiere fashion event platform that aims to drive the Nigerian fashion industry and lift its profile by bringing together buyers, consumers and the media to view the current collections of designers in the fashion capital of Lagos, Nigeria. It will feature both local and international designers and showcase the best of African talents.

Oliberté, maker of sustainable leather shoes and bags handmade in Africa, is the first footwear manufacturing facility in the world to be Fair Trade Certified™ by Fair Trade USA. Oliberté opened its factory in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2012 to produce high-quality products in a work environment that values workers’ rights and fair wages. Passing Fair Trade USA’s audit process means that Oliberté is now shipping the world’s first Fair Trade Certified shoes to its retailers worldwide.

Eponymous is owned by Titilayo Shotile-Belo, this collection is called Envy- the collection brings forth designs that is perfect for the modern woman. The Titi Belo woman has iconic strength and beauty, versatility and is not intimidated by adventure.

According to the designer, the collection is made up of several pieces which reveal areas of the body that most women do not feel confident enough to flaunt thus making the wearer a subject of envy.

The countdown has begun for the third edition of The Life House’s Lights, Camera, Africa!!! Film Festival 2013 set to uplift Lagosians’ spirits using film and other forms of art over the Independence Day holiday, from September 28 to October 1.

The Ankara Festival was designed to showcase upcoming and established designers who specialize in using traditional African fabrics and prints to create contemporary clothing in a fashion show.

THERE ARE many African Caribbeans who feel uncomfortable talking about dementia.

However, recent statistics show that it is an issue that needs to be tackled.

According to the charity, the Alzheimer’s Society, there are currently 12,000 people with dementia from black and minority ethnic communities in the UK. It is estimated that this could rise to 3.8 million by 2051.

The collection represents high fashion, feminine and a very sensual physical being with a lot of sexual power. The silhouette is a great combination of sexy and simple.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration and the Nigeria China Business Council (NCBC) are to collaborate in the provision of skills acquisition and development of entrepreneurs in the fashion industry in the FCT.

The Honourable Minister of State for FCT, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, stated this at the weekend during a meeting with the National Director of Public Affairs of NCBC, Dr. Chukwu Tony Chime and Chief Executive Officer of Asakeoge Couture Limited, Miss Asake Agoro.

The minister explained that the partnership between the Administration and NCBC would empower young men and women with business skills towards bringing positive growth and development to the Nigerian fashion industry.

The organizers of Africa Fashion Week London in partnership with Ebonyworths and Mahogany productions are delighted to announce the launch of a designers’ competition reality show; Nigeria’s Next Top Designer otherwise known as NNTD.

NNTD is about establishing and encouraging the best emerging fashion designers from Nigeria and promoting and showcasing them on a world stage platform Africa Fashion Week London, a Fashion Week that celebrates the work of African and African inspired designers in the UK. The annual event debuted in 2011 and has welcomed over 200 African designers.

The New York Fashion Week is fashion’s biggest week in North America, and one of the most glamorous and exclusive fashion-related events in the world.

The ceremony, which kicked off Thursday evening, will be showcasing 2014 spring/summer collections. Among the many fabulous designers who were invited to illustrate their collections, there are 3 Africans.

 

Kahindo Mateene, who’s based in Chicago, but originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, is the creator behind MODHANIK, a clothing line well-known for its mix of vibrant colors and bold prints. Mateene, who’s well-traveled, gets her inspiration from the European culture and “Avant Garde” spirit of the Congolese culture.

The Congolese designer, who appeared on Season 12 of the Project Runway, has been featured on runways in Los Angeles, Chicago, Johannesburg and New York.

All is set for Nigeria’s freshest street wear brand, Always fresh Gear (AFG) to launch its newest collection – The Fresh Life+ collection. The collection is an eclectic display of modern style and groovy design in celebration of the trendy youth and it is an extension of their debut collection of 2012-Fresh Life collection. AFG a product of ONUK INKTERACTIVE-a visual communications outfit ran by creative twin brothers, Tony & Francis Onuk.

According to the label “She knows who she is from the inside and this reflects in the clothes she wears. She flaunts her curves with muted shine and lustrous textures. With heavily embellished pieces, she dresses like an ornament in public, and she probably runs the show at home. Nails polished, hair fixed, she hits the boardroom….this lady sure knows how to work it no matter the occasion. Jewel By Lisa is a luxury womenswear fashion brand by designer Lisa Folawiyo. Jewel By Lisa’s trademark style consists of jewels embellished on Ankara print pieces.

According to the designer, “The collection was inspired by Lagos city landscapes, in particular Makoko, a popular Lagos city slum, located on water and built on stilts. Through print and design, the collection examines the idea of luxury and power, high and low, rich and poor and mirrors this through a woman on stilts. This season it’s about power, resilience, and strength. It’s about the Jewel by Lisa woman standing firm albeit with femininity and charm. Thus the clothes represent a darkness that is empowering but play on soft florals in light hues. The silhouettes, bold and exaggerated, reflect this toughness.”
