Designer Update: Meet The 3 African Designers showing at the New York Fashion Week 2013

The New York Fashion Week is fashion’s biggest week in North America, and one of the most glamorous and exclusive fashion-related events in the world.

The ceremony, which kicked off Thursday evening, will be showcasing 2014 spring/summer collections. Among the many fabulous designers who were invited to illustrate their collections, there are 3 Africans.

Kahindo Mateene, who’s based in Chicago, but originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, is the creator behind MODHANIK, a clothing line well-known for its mix of vibrant colors and bold prints. Mateene, who’s well-traveled, gets her inspiration from the European culture and “Avant Garde” spirit of the Congolese culture.
The Congolese designer, who appeared on Season 12 of the Project Runway, has been featured on runways in Los Angeles, Chicago, Johannesburg and New York.
